The new venture has launched with three red varieties each produced in the Italian region of Umbria and inspired by an iconic French vehicle from Mullin’s own Mullin Automotive Museum collection.
Oxnard, Calif. (July 26, 2019)– Award-winning car collector, Mullin Automotive Museum Founder and CEO Peter Mullin has today introduced his latest business venture, Mullin Estate Wines. With a selection of gourmet vintages each inspired by a bespoke French automobile in the museum collection, Mullin Estate Wines has launched with four distinctive bottlings: the 2016 Rosso Umbria IGT, 2016 Syrah Umbria IGT, 2016 Sangiovese Umbria IGT and 2018 Grechetto IGT.
The year 2016 marked the very first high-quality production for Mullin Estate Wines. His Doglio vineyard is close to the medieval hilltop town of Todi in Umbria, known as the green heart of Italy. The ancient viticulture tradition here traces back to the Etruscans who began growing grapes thousands of years ago. Made by third-generation winemaker Paolo Trappolini, the wines are bottled, labeled and packaged in the local cantina for shipment predominantly to the USA and United Kingdom.
“With Mullin Estate Wines, we’ve strived to expertly blend the artistry of both fine wines and the automobile,” said Mullin Automotive Museum Founder and CEO Peter Mullin. “These are my two great passions in life, and I’m proud to share that passion with this unique pairing to wine connoisseurs and car enthusiasts alike.”
In well over three decades of collecting, Peter Mullin has amassed one of the finest collections of classic automobiles anywhere in the world, featuring unique treasures from French marques such as Bugatti, Delage, Delahaye, Hispano-Suiza, Talbot-Lago and Voisin. His collection, primarily housed in the eponymous Mullin Automotive Museum, has competed and won top-flight awards in both vintage racing and concours events around the globe.
2016 Rosso Umbria IGT
The youngest and most versatile of the family, the “little” Rosso Umbria is inspired by the 1930 Bugatti Type 46 Cabriolet—Mrs. Mullin’s personal choice. Best paired with simply-prepared red meat, pasta with ragout and roasted poultry, this red blend is full bodied with an intense flavor and smooth tannins.
2016 Syrah Umbria IGT
Like the 1937 Talbot-Lago Type 150-C-S “Teardrop,” the Syrah Umbria is elegant, serious and powerful. Delicious with braised red meat, steaks and seasonal cheeses, this wine has a round and silky flavor composition with equally round and rich tannins.
2016 Sangiovese Umbria IGT
Made with the best selection of grapes in limited quantities, Sangiovese is the leading indigenous grape of both Tuscany and Umbria. It is the crown jewel of the collection, much like its 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic counterpart. With deep, warm flavors of plum, spices, dark chocolate and tobacco, this wine has good minerality and a very long-lasting taste.
2018 Grechetto Umbria IGT
With an intense scent of white flowers, white peach and hazelnut with a pleasant, yet slightly bitter, almond aftertaste, the Grechetto Umbria is as airy and breathtaking as the legendary “Star of India” 1938 Delahaye 135M bodied by Figoni that inspired it. Mullin Estate Wines’ first white wine makes a perfect pair with seafood, shellfish, pasta with ragout, legume soups and light sheep cheese.
