Now on display at the museum, the collage by conceptual artist Heidi Mraz tells the moving story of the 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia Roadster
Oxnard, Calif. (September 4, 2019) – On Thursday, August 29, 2019, the Mullin Automotive Museum unveiled a new collage by conceptual artist, visual storyteller and car enthusiast Heidi Mraz. The artwork, titled “Beneath the Surface: Bugatti of Lake Maggiore,” is inspired by the Mullin Collection’s 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia Roadster, nicknamed “Lady of the Lake” after spending nearly 75 years submerged in Lake Maggiore, Italy.
Based in Great Falls, Virginia, Mraz began work on “Beneath the Surface: Bugatti of Lake Maggiore” almost one and a half years ago by researching and gathering ephemera about the car. The piece is compiled of more than 1,500 curated and hand-cut elements that each relates to the car it represents. Mraz painted the canvas background with water-soluble inks, took it to Lake Maggiore and submerged it to let the water wash away part of the painting. The full story of the journey will be featured in Mraz’s upcoming documentary, “Automotive Artifacts.”
“The tale of the ‘Lady of the Lake’ tugs at the heartstrings of anyone who hears it,” said Mullin Automotive Museum Founder and CEO Peter Mullin. “The vehicle is a prime example of painstakingly crafted artwork created by Ettore Bugatti and finished by the likes of Mother Nature. Heidi Mraz interpreted the incredible story, made it her own and turned it into an impressive piece of art which is displayed proudly in the museum.”
