Renowned artist and long-time Big Sur resident Emile Norman’s groundbreaking artwork will be on display at COAST Big Sur from May 5-31
BIG SUR, CALIF. (April 18, 2022) In conjunction with the Emile Norman Arts Foundation, COAST Big Sur is excited to host a month-long exhibit of a unique selection of items and works from celebrated artist Emile Norman. Each Norman piece on display at COAST will be carefully chosen from his personal collection of works in Big Sur, not usually made available to public view.
Emile Norman is best known for his intricate sculptures, mosaics, jewelry and panels using innovative techniques and a multitude of natural and man-made materials. In the 1950s, Norman developed his famous “endomosiac” technique using crushed glass, plastic, wood, epoxy and other materials suspended between acrylic sheets. His works have been featured in Vogue, the New York Times, and other periodicals as well as exhibited in national museums and parts of private collections. Norman moved to Big Sur in 1946, using the vibrant ecology of the area as inspiration for his work until his passing in 2009.
The opening reception takes place on May 5 in the COAST Gallery, where Norman’s work will be on display. Please register for free here to reserve your space. Small bites and beverages will be made available throughout the duration of the evening.
The ongoing exhibit is free to the public and will continue through May every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m., concluding on Memorial Day. Guests will have the opportunity to speak with a docent from the Emile Norman Arts Foundation to answer their questions about Norman’s life and work.
“COAST Big Sur has a long legacy of supporting local artists, and we are honored to host this special exhibit of Emile Norman’s work,” said COAST Big Sur CEO Peter Mullin. “Having made Big Sur his home for over six decades, he was one of the founders of our local art scene and an important artist nationally. We look forward to paying homage to him and letting the public enjoy his unique work.”
