The new SUV from Volkswagen joins collector cars on the road for the 2,100 mile journey
Chattanooga, TN. (June, 2017) — Coker Tire announced today that the newest SUV crossover from Volkswagen – the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas – will be joining the Great Race as the pace vehicle.
Spectators along the race route will be among the first to see the Atlas in action and get up close and personal with the new vehicle at each Great Race stop.
The Atlas is based on VW’s traverse MQB platform shared with the Golf and new Tiguan. The base engine is a 2.0-liter, turbocharged making 238 horsepower. The support team will be comfortable taking the 2,100 mile journey with a spacious interior equipped with three rows and 96.8 cubic feet of cargo space, as well as a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink connectivity.
“We are excited to have the Atlas from Volkswagen as the pace vehicle,” said Corky Coker, CEO of Coker Tire. “This late model Volkswagen with its comfortable interior and modern amenities will make driving those 2,100 miles along the Dixie Highway much easier for the staff and support team running the Great Race.”
The Great Race, the world’s premiere vintage automobile speed/time/distance rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest collector cars (built in 1972 and earlier) to 17 cities, starting June 24 in Jacksonville, Florida and ending July 2 in Traverse City, Michigan. The winner of the Great Race will receive $50,000 of the $150,000 total purse.
The event’s main sponsors are Hemmings Motor News, Hagerty, Coker Tire, Reliable Carriers, Champion Racing Oil and Stahls.
